I tend to use this phrase: “becoming a real person.” Essentially, this means that when we go through these rights of passage (turning 18, going to college, getting a job, becoming more independent) that contribute to us becoming real people (an adult). I like to think of myself as almost being a real person since I’m 17, have a few too many jobs, am quite independent, and have applied to 2 1/2 of my 6 colleges.
Last night I went to a going away party for a friend, and I didn’t realize I would have a hard time saying goodbye. Maybe it was because they are a real person now and I am feeling stuck, but mostly just because I realized they are moving on with their life and chronologically speaking, I’m not there yet. Close though.
