2016 & Thoughts on 2017

I had a fantastic feeling about 2016, and specifically about being 20 years old. All over social media and at work, I see 2016 labeled as the “worst year ever.” Besides the obvious, I had a great year! Yes the election was a disaster, yes I am scared for the future of our political and ecological climate, but when I reflect on 2016: I worked hard, grew more confident in my intuition, paid more attention to my body and my needs, and read more books. I am satisfied and gratified with all of the above.

Each year I try to pick a motto instead of a resolution (read about it here), and for 2017 I have chosen the word mindful.

Mindful means to be conscious or aware of something. Anything! I want to be more aware of how I treat myself and those around me. I want to nourish my body, be aware how I make others feel, and make sure that I am cherishing friendships and spending time with people where we can help each other grow.

I feel the best when I am gluten and dairy free, yet I still eat it 40% of the time and silently cry when I poop because it hurts so bad. Why do I do that to myself?? If you asked me for advice and were like “Gaby, it hurts when I poop because I ate free Cheezits on the plane” I would be like “Dude, don’t do that. Why the fuck would you do that to yourself?”

I feel confident that I can get my wellness back on track because I am already on the path. I have developed a lovely morning routine of making hot lemon water and meditating for 10 minutes before I start my day, and I am so proud of that! I look forward to doing it each morning, and I am excited to continue to create healthy habits for myself.

Like I said, there is no denying that typical resolutions do not set us (me) up for success, and in Leandra Medine’s excerpt from a Man Repeller podcast episode she agrees. I appreciated her thoughts and specifically the snippet: “Let’s aim to be the most honest and thoughtful and truest versions of ourselves, but nothing more, nothing less.”

There is a lovely energy that new beginnings bring, so in 2017 I want to feel:

  • Confident in my decisions
  • Mindful
  • Awake
  • Balanced (in my body, not my time management)
  • Excited to learn
  • Supported
  • Nourished
  • Loved
  • Warm
